whittier is a special place. i could not imagine living there - in fact only 180 people can. it is a small town created by the army to have an access harbor for its soldiers coming to alaska in world war II. today, it is popular for cruise ships. if you don´t come to whittier by ship, you have to drive through the longest tunnel in north america. it costs 12 bucks, and for european standards the tunnel is very short, a little bit more than 2 miles. that´s as long as the felbertauerntunnel back home!

the first stop was valdez, that's where the pipeline ends. valdez is well known for the exxon valdez oil spill in 1989, and it also called the "switzerland" of alaska. it´s quite a long drive down there, so i needed to treat my back a bit.

hiking the kesugi ridge was a success. we left the parking lot in denali state park friday at noon, and finished our adventure on sunday at the same time. in 48 hours we hiked 43km (28 miles) on difficult terrain. also, it was quite rainy - but we had cake! the trip was guided by max and bryce from uaf outdoor adventures. they wanted to scout the ridge for future trips with more students. isabel and I were their guinea pigs. :-) and, it was the first time I saw a black bear in the wild.

this is bailey, an 8 year old male caribou. his antlers at this time of the year are covered with a beautiful brown fuzz, the velvet. the velvet makes the antlers very sensitive. only when they lose the velvet in late summer the males start jousting with other bulls to compete over the cows.

Ron Paul, der Wolf im Libertärenpelz, wird ja wohl keine große Rolle mehr im Kampf um die US-Präsidentschaft führen. Auf der Uni hier sind die Ron Paul - Aktivisten allerdings sehr fleissig. Die Utensilien habe ich auf meinem Weg von der Cafeteria zum Hörsaal in die Hand gedrückt bekommen. Auch eine kleine Unterstützungserklärung für Barack Obama liegt dabei. Alaska hält seine Caucuses am kommenden Dienstag, dem "Supertuesday".

Ah, es gibt kaum updates, und der Flo hat sich schon (zurecht) darüber beschwert. Er hat mir sogar mit Klage gedroht, da fällt mir ein, klagen wir den Mayrl jetzt oder wie?
Wie auch immer, ich glaube, das nächste Mal werde ich erst zur Ruhe kommen, wenn ich im Flugzeug nach Hause sitze. Ich freue mich schon auf ein Bier zu Weihnachten mit euch allen, 25. Felbermühle ist wohl fix :-) Falls es sich ausgeht schreib ich hier hin und wieder was rein, aber e-mails gibt es auf alle Fälle noch!
Jetzt ist außerdem Semesterhalbzeit, 1/8 meiner Studiendauer ist somit vorbei. Man kann auch sagen, das Glas ist ein Achtel voll. Prost.

Man findet immer schnell raus, was am Campus gerade so läuft. Überall werden Zettel angeschlagen: am Donnerstag Hallenfußball, am Mittwoch eine Band im Pub, immer ist irgendwo eine Filmvorführung, die Campusdemokraten treffen sich zur Beratschlagung. Eine dieser Ankündigungen hat Ruaridh aus Schottland besonders gefallen: Rugby, Samstag um 5. Sachen dieser Art werden oft von verschiedenen Clubs organisiert, auf den Rugby-Flyern steht der Name "ROTC". Dahinter verbirgt sich die US-Armee, genauer gesagt die von der US-Armee gesponserten Studenten. Ruaridh war etwas betreten, als er heute zum Abendessen kam - kein Rugby, er war der Einzige vor Ort. Rugby ist dieses Semester abgesagt, hieß es, die Zettel wären schon vor Wochen entfernt worden, da müssten wohl noch ein paar vergessen worden sein. Der Grund: Die ROTC-Gruppe, die das hätte veranstalten sollen, ist auf dem Weg in den Irak.
Es ist wahrscheinlich, dass es sich hier um eine Campus-Legende handelt - das Rugbyspiel, das nicht statt findet, weil die Beteiligten in den Krieg müssen. Es ist einfach zu krass um wahr zu sein. Trotzdem. Die Tatsache, dass hier darüber diskutiert wird - und dass wir Europäer uns alle nicht sicher sind, dass es nicht DOCH wahr sein könnte - zeigt, dass die Uhren in einem Land das im Krieg steht anders ticken als zu Hause.

Nachdem ich Tränen gelacht habe über Hubert Gorbachs Peinlichkeit (ich bin gespannt, welche "old-time friends" er sonst noch kontaktiert hat, würde mich wundern wenn nicht der Arnie dabei wäre), nun wieder zurück in die Wirklichkeit. Hier ein paar Fotos vom Kanuausflug letztes Wochenende. Wir waren am Upper Chena River unterwegs. Ein ruhiger Fluss, der einer Amerikanerin allerdings fast zum Verhängnis geworden wäre. Es gibt ein paar gefinkelte Stellen, und an einer dieser Stellen kippten zwei Kanus um. Das Wasser hat ungefähr 4 Grad Celsius, es ist also unangenehm, dort baden zu gehen.

Meine Tätigkeit als teaching assistant für das Fach Political Economy ist sehr schön. Auch wenn ich bis jetzt kaum zu tun habe (das wird sich mit den ersten Prüfungen die ich korrigieren muss schnell ändern), ergeben sich für mich viele neue Perspektiven und Eindrücke, die dieses faszinierende Gebiet noch beeindruckender machen. Hauptaugenmerk des Kurses liegt auf dem Gefälle zwischen Arm und Reich in den USA. Eines der Textbücher hat ein bedrückendes Cover: Der Blick auf das Capitol in Washington D.C., halb verstellt von Barracken und Obdachlosen.
In den USA, wo vieles etwas größer und lauter ist und Kritik selten subtil und oft unverschleiert vorgetragen wird, werden auch im Unterricht die verschiedenen Ansichten klar und deutlich auf den Punkt gebracht. Ich bin positiv überrascht von der Einsicht - oder Weitsicht - die viele Studenten an den Tag legen. Für viele ist der Bundesstaat Michigan ein warnendes Beispiel, wie es einer Gesellschaft ergehen kann, die von einigen wenigen Großkonzernen abhängig ist. Seit die Autoindustrie in und um Detroit im Sterben liegt, geht es mit Michigan und seinen Einwohnern bergab. Was Arbeitslosigkeit für den Einzelnen bedeutet, wird in dem ausgezeichneten Film "Los lunes al sol" (2002) verdeutlicht. 6 Männer mittleren Alters finden nach dem Schließen einer Werft in Nordspanien keine Arbeit mehr und kommen der Verzweiflung jeden Tag einen Schritt näher. Das wirklich faszinierende an "Los lunes al sol" ist allerdings der trotz allem zu verspürende positive Unterton der Lust aufs Leben macht.
Also anschauen! Der Fängsy, Flo und ich haben ihn vor ein paar Jahren im DasKino gesehen, ich gab in mir diese Woche also zum zweiten Mal, hat er mich sogar noch stärker beeindruckt.

Es ist wirklich verrückt, aber ich bin nicht der einzige Österreicher in Fairbanks - ja, nicht einmal der einzige Salzburger. Da ist der Reini aus Bad Gastein, er besucht die Fachhochschule in Kufstein, und wir haben schon darüber gescherzt, einen Fairbankser Stammtisch zu eröffnen. Und heute im Pub am Campus habe ich auch den Andi aus Tirol kennen gelernt, er wird, wie es ausschaut, auch für 2 Jahre hier sein und sein Geld mit Skaten fürs Langlauf-Team verdienen. Überhaupt ist Fairbanks viel internationaler als ich es mir je vorgestellt habe. Jemanden zu finden, der hier aufgewachsen ist, ist nicht einfach!

Alaska ist riesig. Auf die Karte der 48 Staaten gelegt, reicht es von der Kanadischen Grenze im Norden bis nach Florida im Süd-Osten bzw. nach Los Angeles im Westen. Würde man Alaska in 2 Hälften teilen, wäre Texas der drittgrößte Staat.

Ich bin bereits mitten drin in meinen Kursen. 3 sind es, das klingt wenig, aber der Arbeitsaufwand ist sehr hoch. History of Alaska, Perspectives on the North und Comparative Environmental Policies. Außerdem muss ich mich bereits um ein Thema für die Diplomarbeit bemühen. Ich bin im Global Environmental Policy-Zweig, also wird es wohl irgendwas diesbezügliches werden, es gibt unzählige Möglichkeiten. Auf jeden Fall wird da ein Kommitee aufgestellt, ich weiss nicht genau wozu, und das muss bald geschehen. Na dann, auf zur Themenfindung!

Meine Bürozeiten sind jeweils Montags von 13.00 bis 15.00 Uhr, wer möchte kann gerne auf einen Kaffee vorbeischauen. Die Bezeichnung "Büro" ist ein Euphemismus erster Klasse - meine Mum stellt daheim den Staubsauger in diese Art von "Büro", aber es ist mein Büro und ich mag es.
Hier kommen Studenten vorbei (bislang noch niemand), die Probleme haben, den Unterrichtsstoff zu verstehen. Ich werde dann versuchen, ihnen zu helfen. Morgen sollten sie zum Beispiel in der Lage sein, die 4 Dimensionen repräsentativer Demokratie zu benennen. Das ist einfach, es handelt sich dabei um die 4 Dings, die die, na egal, ich hab meinen Abschluss ja schon.

Als Ausländer in den USA Arbeitsverträge auszuarbeiten ist kompliziert. Ich weiss nicht, wie viele Steuerformulare, Aufenthaltsbestätigungen und dergleichen ich in den letzten Tagen unterschrieben habe - es war ein ganzer Haufen. Aber nun bin ich durch, und es kann studien- und arbeitstechnisch losgehen. Meine erste Unterrichtseinheit als Teaching Assistant hatte ich bereits, ist gut gelaufen. Ich versuche, den Undergrad-Studenten beizubringen, wie wichtig es ist, sich mit Political Economy zu befassen. Außerdem muss ich Tests und Papers korrigieren - das wird bestimmt hart am Anfang, vor allem, wenn man kein Native Speaker ist.
Egal, es ist Freitag Mittag und das Wochenende steht vor der Tür! Zeit, sich auch Downtown Fairbanks mal näher anzuschauen.

Orientation

Heute standen insgesamt 3 "Orientation-Sessions" am Programm, die insgesamt 9 Stunden dauerten. Jetzt bin ich schon um einiges schlauer, wie das Leben hier am Campus so abläuft, übermorgen beginnen dann die Kurse. Ich weiß jetzt auch, dass ich als Teaching Assistant für Political Economy arbeiten werde, außerdem habe ich mit meinem Advisor sozusagen eine "road map" entworfen: Ich weiß jetzt genau, wann ich welche Kurse besuchen muss bzw. welche Termine ich für meine Diplomarbeit beachten muss, um in 4 Semestern fertig zu sein. Fertig bin ich auch jetzt, allerdings im angenehmen Sinn. Heute war ein ziemlich intensiver Tag, mehr darüber in den nächsten Einträgen. Ich hab mir gerade ein Deschutes aufgemacht, werde Quantic hören und dann etwas Schlaf nachholen.

Oh, und ich merke gerade, dass man in meinem Blog eingefügte Links kaum erkennt. Naja, viel Spaß beim Suchen!

Auf dem Foto grinse ich extra blöd, aber das liegt daran, dass die Sonne sehr stark blendet. Ohne Sonnenbrille ist man um die Mittagszeit fast blind. Schauen wir mal wie lange das ein Problem ist. In der offiziell 7. kältesten Stadt der Welt müssen im Winter nämlich manchmal Studenten wegen Frostbeulen behandelt werden, wurde mir gesagt. Na dann komme ich mit meinen Crocs vielleicht doch nicht über die kalte Jahreszeit...

Tag 1: Ankunft in Fairbanks

Eigentlich hätte ich ja gestern schon in Fairbanks ankommen sollen - da ich in Anchorage aber mein Gepäck auschecken musste, war nicht genug Zeit, es erneut einzuchecken (ja, klingt blöd, war es auch). Also habe ich meinen Anschlussflug versäumt, musste mir ein Hotel in Anchorage suchen (Wucherpreise, unglaublich) und habe auch ein wenig Schlaf gefunden. Der Jetlag macht sich deutlich bemerkbar, 10 Stunden bedeuten ja quasi eine Komplettumstellung für den Körper. Tagsüber kann man nix essen und in der Nacht knurrt der Magen.
Auf jeden Fall kam ich heute am späten Vormittag in Fairbanks an, mit mir ein Austauschstudent aus Schottland, und wir wurden direkt vom Flughafen abgeholt und zum Campus gebracht. Dieser ist riesig aber schön, viele Bäume und Grünzeug. Alaska besteht jedoch fast nur aus Bäumen und Grünzeug. Die Sonne scheint und es ist warm (ja, tatsächlich) - trotzdem herrscht Winterstimmung. Der Luftdruck sowie der Duft erinnern mich ans Snowboarden oder Langlaufen. Nicht ans Snowboarden oder Langlaufen an sich, sondern daran, wie es sich anfühlt, wenn man auf den Paß Thurn fährt und am Parkplatz aussteigt. Seltsamer Vergleich, trifft aber zu.
Ich werde jetzt versuchen eine Stunde zu schlafen, heute am Abend beginnt das offizielle Programm. Und falls Rechschreibung, Satzbau und dergleichen in meinem Beitrag etwas seltsam anmuten, tut mir Leid. Erst Schlafdefizit aufholen, dann klappt´s auch wieder mit dem bloggen.

Ich bin gut angekommen, in der Stadt der Commons, Kanye Wests und Al Bundys: Chicago! Nachdem ich mir beim Fruit Stand einen Apfel und eine Banane zur Stärkung besorgt habe, gab es nur ein Ziel: STARBUCKS! Und da sitze ich jetzt mit einem Riesenbecher Kaffee und warte auf meinen Flug nach Anchorage. In 2 Stunden, also um 15:30, ist es soweit. Ich hoffe, mein Gepäck lässt mich nicht im Stich und tritt den gleichen Weg an. Ich habe erst die Hälfte des Weges geschafft, aber ich bin noch fit. Das US-amerikanische Flair ist der beste Kraftspender! Bis bald!

Am 2. August (Donnerstag) bringt der ORF in der Reihe "Universum" eine Alaska-Doku. Aus dem ORF-Pressetext:

"Beeindruckendes Naturkino in seiner schönsten Form: ein filmisches Porträt über den nördlichsten und flächenmäßig größten Bundesstaat der USA - Alaska. Das Ende der Welt - so nannten die ersten Trapper die harsche Nordregion, in die sie vom Westen her vordrangen. Es ist eine Landschaft, die von hohen Gebirgszügen, kilometerlangen Gletscherzungen, dicht bewaldeten Hügelländern und zahlreichen Fjorden geprägt ist. Für die "Universum"-Dokumentation "Alaska - Wildnis am Ende der Welt" begaben sich ein französisches Forscherteam und Naturfilmer Nicolas Hulot auf eine abenteuerliche Expedition von der Brook Range im arktischen Norden bis zu den Aleuten, einer Inselkette zwischen Nordamerika und Asien am Südrand des nordpazifischen Beringmeers. Das filmische Ergebnis ist in der deutschen Bearbeitung von Andrea Gastgeb am Donnerstag, dem 2. August, um 20.15 Uhr in ORF 2 zu sehen.

Unzählige Flüsse und Seen bieten Grizzlys reiche Fischgründe, an den Ufern weiden stattliche Elche und an den Fjorden der Küsten tummeln sich Seeotter. Alaskas Wildnis ist keine gezähmte, geordnete Landschaft. Wild, rau und einsam ist es hier. Namenlose Flüsse mäandrieren durch von Eisströmen ausgeschliffene Täler, gigantische Gletscher bedecken viele tausend Quadratkilometer mit einer manchmal 300 Meter dicken Schicht aus Eis, die Berge sind wahre Giganten und viele Gipfel sind noch unbestiegen. Die Chugach-, Wrangell- und St.-Elias-Gebirgsketten bilden das Bergkönigreich Nordamerikas. Es umfasst die größte Ansammlung von Gletschern und Bergen mit mehr als 4.500 Metern auf dem nordamerikanischen Kontinent. Mit rund 5.500 Metern ist der Mount St. Elias der zweithöchste Berg der Vereinigten Staaten. Sein Umland ist geprägt durch die für diese Region so charakteristischen ungezähmten Flüsse, schroff erodierten Täler und eine vielfältige Tier- und Pflanzenwelt. Obwohl ich den Aufnahmebrief der University of Alaska Fairbanks bereits vor einiger Zeit erhalten habe, war mein Online Application Status nach wie vor "incomplete". Das hat mich einigermaßen beunruhigt, da ja mein offizieller Titel ja "Bakk.phil" und nicht "B.A." lautet, obwohl es exakt dasselbe ist. "Womöglich," dachte ich "erkennen das die Amis nicht an, wundern würde es mich nicht!" Wäre das so gewesen, wäre ich wieder vor einem bürokratischen Übersetzungsmarathon gestanden, auf den ich echt keinen Bock mehr hatte. Heute habe ich aber folgende Nachricht erhalten:

ok, so now there finally is some news on my studying-abroad-plans. as some of you might know, I applied for graduate school in fairbanks, alaska. that´s my first choice, but not the only one. meanwhile I got accepted in bergen, norway, so if alaska says "no" you will find me here. I guess alaska and norway do have some things in common and I am very happy for having the opportunity to study in scandinavia.

Lewis Libby Jr., the former chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney was convicted today of lying to F.B.I agents and grand jurors investigating the unmasking of a C.I.A.operative amid a burning dispute over the war in Iraq. The jury rejected Mr. Libby’s claims of memory lapses as it convicted him of obstruction of justice, giving false statements to the F.B.I. and perjuring himself, charges embodied in four of the five counts of the indictment."

The "C.I.A. operative" is Valerie Plame, wife of former ambassador Joe Wilson. Joe Wilson spoke at Willamette University a year ago, so, because of the new developments, I post my impression once again:

now it takes some background information, one can start here for example, to enjoy what I call "the joe wilson show". needless to say, with all his (diplomatic) experience it is hard to find a speaker more eloquent than joe wilson. willamette students and salem townspeople had the pleasure to be witnesses of what it means to "live" freedom of speech.

accusing the us-government of starting war in iraq under false pretenses, wilson´s article "what I didn´t find in africa" (first published by "the new york times" in july 2003) brought him into trouble. his wife´s identity as a cia-agent got revealed in an article by columnist robert novak. since this act of treason, "valerie plame" is a name well known in the united states. anyhow, the traitors have not been called to account for their felony yet. and just click on the novak link to get an idea of the variety of persons involved in this scandal.

for wilson, one thing is clear: the government wanted his wife´s identity to be revealed because of three main reasons: to change the subject towards something more advantageous for the government, pure revenge for not supporting the war in iraq and, most important, to make an example of him. the ordinary us-citizens should know that if they did the same to the government than joe wilson, then the government would do to the citizens what it did to joe wilson and his wife.

so wilson sees it as his mission to speak up against such injustice. "you must hold our government to account". the united states depends on the vigilance of the citizens for its success. in his eyes, the bush administration lied and twisted intelligence to get support for a war that should not have been fought under these circumstances.

it´s his word against the governments. and, as always, one has to be very cautious to take every word that´s said for granted. but joe wilson shows that public dispute is far from being dead in the states. and climbing onto a podium and expressing ones believes is by itself an act essential to every vital democracy.

He is a hero of the political left in Europe and he sure is one of the most charismatic persons of the 20th century: Ernsesto "Che" Guevara - the Argentinian upper middle class doctor who got the Cuban Revolution under way in the late 1950's. With the other half of this "project" - Fidel Castro - being close to death, it is the right time (well, it is ALWAYS the right time) to recommend a book that does a good job in "separating the man from the myth", as the New York Times Book Review finds. JON LEE ANDERSON'S "CHE" is a classic by now. First published in 1997 this epic biography gives an insight into the weird struggle of the Cuban Revolution. It started with the journey of a group of men to the island south of Florida on what by today´s standards cannot be called a boat (the boat´s name was grandma - so is the title of a Cuban propaganda newspaper). It continued in the Cuban wilderness - with scarce supplies. Eventually, and I still don´t get how exactly that was possible, Che and his men managed to overthrow a corrupt and smugly self-confident system, a system, where nobody with a liberal-democratic mindset would want to live. But who would want to live in Che´s socialist Cuba either? There were plenty of downsides to this whole thing, you can still see them today. Other than the fact that Che´s beloved firing squads had a lot of work to do in the dawn of the revolution, life under his regiment reminds one of a George Orwell novel ("1984" or "Animal Farm" - choose your favourite). Free speech, free press, free choice of what to study? Non of these things existed, and mostly still don´t exist in 2007. That is particulary interesting since Che is extraordinarily popular among students. If you plan the economy, don´t plan on a prosperous future for your country (probably somone already put it like this, if not, I keep the credits).
Until his death, Che's vision was to enable a revolution that would hit the Americas like a huge wave. That didn´t exactly work out the way he imagined. Maybe one of his biggest problems was that his closest comrades - first and foremost Fidel - were not as idealistic about Socialism/Communism/Marxism/Leninism than Che himself. They paid lip service to Che´s ideas and real service to power and influence.

Let´s wait and see how long Cuba will be like we know it. Of course, oil money comes in handy these days - but I have already talked about that elsewhere.

...I admit it´s a bit frustrating but I received a letter from UAF, saying that they don´t accept the grades from the University of Salzburg. well, they do accept them, but not before they are sent to WES first. but before I do that, I will finish my B.A. here so I can submitt all the stuff, not just parts of it. what does that mean? I still don´t know whether or not I get to go to AK, at least for a couple more months...

and WWU wrote that they did not get my TOEFL scores. I keep sending and sending stuff but nothing reaches its destination it seems like.

the austrian remainings of the ATTAC movement complain about the decreasing opportunities for citizens to express their opinions. "attac finded das schon lange verheerend" ("attac thinks that´s awful"), and so they have installed an "act now" section in their homepage, giving visitors the possibility of sharing their thoughts on a variety of topics.

well, "variety" may be the wrong word. "insufficient variety" seems better. the only two questions asked are "how are you today?" (68.8% are doing great) and, for people who are not overchallenged already, "how do you like our new homepage?".

Anti-fair trade mit gutem Gewissen

Im "Economist", Ausgabe December 9th-15th, lautet die Schlagzeile: "Good food? Why ethical shopping harms the world". Argumentiert wird mit klassisch liberalen Prinzipien, kurz gesagt: "Only free trade is fair trade".

Konkret werden drei Aspekte unserer derzeitigen Einkaufskultur kritisiert. Zum einen wäre da der Hang, "biologische" Produkte zu kaufen. Zum zweiten sollen die Produkte im Einkaufskorb am besten "zu fairen Bedingungen", also "fair trade", hergestellt sein. Schließlich wird auch Wert darauf gelegt, so "lokal wie möglich" einzukaufen, also am besten direkt vom Bauern am Rande der Stadt. Das klingt super und damit soll die Welt durch unser Kaufverhalten besser werden. Warum schreibt der "Economist" dann: "If you think you can save the planet by buying ethical food, think again"?

1. Probleme mit Bionahrung

Die Herstellung von "biologisch einwandfreier" Nahrung, also ohne Verwendung von Pestiziden usw. ist sehr "raumintensiv", dh es besteht schlicht nicht genug Platz, unsere gesamte Nahrung in dieser Weise herzustellen. Durch die Verwendung von Düngern etc. ist es möglich, das gleiche Stück Land ständig zu bewirtschaften. So ist es auch der "Green Revolution" aus den 1960er Jahren zu verdanken, dass zwar die Produktionsquote von Nahrung seit den 50ern verdreifacht wurde, dafür aber nur 10% mehr Landfläche vonnöten ist! Man kann auch sagen: wer bio-food kauft, unterstützt die Abholzung von Regenwald, weil irgendwo muss der Platz ja herkommen. Übrigens gibt es keine Studien darüber, dass Bioessen gesünder oder höherwertiger wäre, als konventionell hergestellte Nahrung, solange gewisse Regeln beachtet werden.

2. Probleme mit "Fair Trade"

Die Idee hinter "Fair Trade" ist folgende: Der Konsument ist bereit einen höheren Preis als den Marktpreis für ein Produkt zu bezahlen. Die Differenz kommt, theoretisch, direkt den Erzeugern zu Gute. Sie bekommen mehr Geld für die gleiche Arbeit, werden also "fairer" entlohnt. Der "Ungerechtigkeit der niedrigen Preise" soll so entgegengewirkt werden. Dahinter versteckt sich klassischer Protektionsimus, die Selbstregulierungsfunktion des Marktes wird ausgehebelt. Es ist einfach: Die Nachfrage bestimmt das Angebot und den Preis. Niedrige Preise sind Zeichen dafür, dass es schon zu viel von einem Produkt auf dem Markt gibt. Nehmen wir unsere Milchbauern und ihre "A Faire Milch", die es seit kurzem zu erstehen gibt. Würde man den Gesetzen des freien Marktes folgen, wären viele Milchbauern gezwungen, in andere, ertragreichere Bereiche als jener der Milchproduktion zu investieren. Durch die subventionierte Milch kommt dieses Signal nur ungenügend an, sie verharren in der Milchproduktion. Darüber hinaus werden andere Bauern animiert, noch mehr "Fair Trade" Milch zu produzieren, weil sich damit ja mehr Geld machen lässt, als eigentlich vorgesehen. Jene Bauern, die konventionell Milch erzeugen und die große Mehrheit darstellen, haben es dadurch noch schwerer. Sie verdienen weniger als zuvor, gleichzeitig wird der Vielfältigkeit ein Riegel vorgeschoben, da sich alle auf subventionierte Bereiche stürzen.
Dasselbe gilt für Kaffee: es ist nicht so einfach, als Produzent "Fair Trade" Status zu erlangen und so schauen zum Beispiel ausnahmslos alle Plantagenarbeiter durch die Finger. Kaffeeplantagen im großen Stil entsprechen nämlich nicht den Fair Trade Kriterien.

3. Probleme mit lokaler Produktion

Viele ehemalige Fair Trade Befürworter haben die Probleme erkannt und sagen: "Buying direct means producers get a fair price, with no middlemen adding big margins along the distribution chain." Außerdem muss die Nahrung nicht um die halbe Welt geliefert werden, man spart also an "food miles" (jener Weg, den ein Produkt von seiner Entstehung bis zum Endkonsumenten zurück legt). Das größte Problem liegt darin, festzustellen, wo denn ein Produkt am besten und umweltfreundlichsten hergestellt werden kann. Es ist klüger, Tomaten aus Spanien zu importieren als diese in einem britischen Gewächshaus über den Winter zu züchten. So verhält es sich mit vielen Produkten. Außerdem ist das Zuliefersystem der Supermärkte mittlerweile äußerst effizient. "Another surprising finding was that a shift towards a local food system, and away from a supermarket-based food system, with its central distribution depots, lean supply chains and big, full trucks, might actually increase the number of food-vehicle miles being travelled locally, because things would move around in a larger number of smaller, less efficiently packed vehicles."

Die Revolution durch Fair Trade - sie wird wohl nicht passieren.

...aber viel tut sich nicht zur zeit. sobald es us-unitechnisch etwas neues gibt werde ich das hier posten, aber das wird noch eine weile dauern. jetzt sind alle nötigen unterlagen auf dem weg nach alaska und wenn ich glück habe, werde ich ab august nächsten jahres ordentlich frieren. :-)

ausserdem zerbreche ich mir gerade den kopf über mein thema für die bakk-arbeit. wird wohl etwas mit liberalismus zu tun haben. und legitimtiät der EU. ich rätsle nur, wie ich das am besten verbinden soll. der plan sieht vor mit der schreibarbeit mitte dezember zu beginnen und anfang märz mit allem fertig zu sein. ist schaffbar, denke ich. leider bin ich zur zeit sehr abgelenkt und es fällt mir schwer, mich zu konzentrieren. warum laufen nur ständig so gute serien im fernsehen?

no matter who the new austrian chancellor will be, I recommend him to read charles murray´s "in our hands". the book is a plan to replace the welfare state. sounds utopian? well, sooner or later we will have to face the problems created by our welfare system anyway.

charles murray´s short statement of the argument goes like this: "America´s population is wealthier than any in history. Every year, the American government redistributes more than a trillion dollars of that wealth to provide retirement, health care, and the alleviation of poverty. We still have millions of people without comfortable retirements, without adequate health care, and living in poverty. Only a government can spend so much money so ineffectually. The solution is to give the money to the people."

murray slates to give every american age 21 and older $10 000 a year for life. no other welfare measures would be available. the "plan", as he calls it, would be the end for social security, medicare and all other "income transfer programs". the result should be a prosperous society with poverty and unemployment reduced to the minimum.

I am not going to judge on the strengths and weaknesses of his proposal here - murray himself is aware that his plan is far from becoming implemented policy. but on the same token it is another good reminder of why it is important to keep our government from throwing money down the drain.

... bringt drei kurze mitteilungen:

zum wahlergebnis habe ich den politologen franz fallend von der uni salzburg befragt. das interview kann man hier anhören.

außerdem war dendemann letzten freitag in salzburg. gut, das hat jetzt nicht unmittelbar was mit politik zu tun - trotzdem kam ein interessantes interview zustande, zu hören am 4. oktober ab 21.00 Uhr in der Radiofabrik. eine kleine geschichte gibt es auch.

zur wahl selbst kann ich mir einen kommentar wohl sparen. im oben genannten interview werden einige interessante aspekte aufgegriffen und nach X spezial zeit im bild und vorgezogenen reporten im orf, mit noch mehr interviews von noch mehr politologen, scheint erstmal alles gesagt zu sein. schwarz-grün kann ich mir jedenfalls an den hut stecken.

so, meine stimme habe ich abgegeben, das wäre also auch erledigt - und beim nachhause gehen habe ich mir den kurier, äh, besorgt. der gibt auf seite 1 hervorragende wahl-tipps, um die besatzung eines wahllokals in aufruhr zu versetzen:

- Stocknüchtern, aber mit einem Doppler in der Hand die Bipa-Kundenkarte als Ausweis vorlegen.

- Vor Betreten der Wahlzelle neben dem Bleistift auch zwei Radiergummis verlangen.

- In der Wahlzelle laut und vernehmlich telefonieren: "Heast, is der BZÖ jetzt des mitn Strache?"

- Mehrfach wegen Fehlversuchen einen neuen Stimmzettel verlangen.

- Oder den leeren abgeben und sagen: "Ich muss mir´s noch überlegen, ich komm' morgen wieder."

- Sich in der Wahlzelle entkleiden und das Gewand wie über einen Paravent werfen.

- Wahlbeisitzer und Wähler mit dem Handy fotografieren.

- Bitterlich weinend den Wahlzettel vor dem Einwerfen in die Urne in kleine Stücke zerreissen.

I asked my swedish friends about their thoughts on the recent elections in their homecountry.

mans ramberg from vaxjo has something to say:

"I voted for the center party for a number of reasons. A) They are proposing big changes in the current system of labor laws for the young, which will hopefully make for a more flexible labor market for people my age. B) They have the most consistent EU-policy in my eyes, with exciting ideas about federalism and restructuring of that old dragon. This is true about their ideas for the swedish system as well. Under the new government we can hopefully see the abolishment of such silly ideas as the pharmacy monopoly and other remnants of the social democratic centralistic state. C)They are the most honest of the right wing parties of today. They are consistent in most of their questions and do not follow populist tracks as so many of their co-operators as well as opponents.
There are more reasons, but I would say those are my top ones. When it comes to the election in general, I must say that I am very torn personally. My friend Henrik who is an electrician commented on the election night: "It's a dark day for the swedish workers". To hear that and then see brat-kids from the rights youth movements dance on the street leaves me wondering where I really stand. I do hope and wish that the policies that I vote for will be for the benefit of the weaker in society, but I wonder if my elected politicans think the same. I am feeling the class dimension more than ever.
One thing that worries me a lot is the relative good result for the xenophobic party Sverigedemokraterna in different parts of Sweden. I was hoping that they would never grow above 1 percent, and the current situation tells a lot about the undercurrents and tensions thet has been hidden for a number of yaers but now seem ready to show their ugly face."

"I think a lot of people voted for the right simply cause they want a change for the country, not necessarily cause they're so unhappy with the state of the country. We've had the same part governing the counntry for a long time. Alo, the right have tried to change their image into the new working class party.... we'll see about that.

I voted for the socialdemocrats simply cause I feel they're more in the line with my values - that everyone should be taken care of. I'm both curious about what will happen with the new government, have to admit it is a bit exciting , but I have to say I´m a bit nervous too."

I love to read johan norberg´s blog, you know that already. and I love his analysis about swedish politics. so, of course, he is happy about the outcome of the elections - on monday he writes:

"At last Göran Persson has resigned. And the mood on Stockholm´s streets (where the social democrats have collapsed) is a little more open and free. When I took the bus earlier today the bus driver didn´t charge me and just waived me through with a big smile."

unfortunately, bus drivers are not celebrating by giving passengers a lift for free:

heute bin ich in mich gegangen und habe versucht, die fragen der wahlkabine wahrheitsgetreu zu beantworten - dabei habe ich auch großen wert auf die gewichtung der fragen gelegt. das ist das ergebnis:

ginge man nach diesen ergebnis, würde es für mich wohl sinn machen "taktisch" zu wählen, um schwarz-grün eher zu ermöglichen. mangels einer liberalen alternative ist das wohl das kleinste übel.

am sonntag wird in schweden ein neuer reichstag gewählt. für einige zeit sah es ja so aus, als hätte die sozialdemokratische regierung schlechte chancen, wiedergewählt zu werden. von den letzten 70 jahren waren die sozialdemokraten gute 65 an der macht. nun zeichnete sich wie gesagt bereits ein wechsel ab, ehe sich die liberal-konservative "folkpartiet" mit einem spitzelskandal selbst wieder in den hintergrund gedrängt hat. computer der regierung wurden durchsucht um so "informationsvorsprung" für eigene kampagnen zu erlangen.

viele schweden sind aber nach wie vor der meinung, dass ihr modell des wohlfahrtstaats die anforderungen der nächsten jahrzehnte nicht mehr bewältigen kann. somit kann diese wahl richtungsweisend sein - und die liberale alternative möglicherweise doch noch zu ihrem erfolg kommen.

die politische meldung des tages aus "liberaler" sicht ist das wahlbündnis zwischen der spö und dem liberalen forum. ich bin für jeden kommentar dankbar, der mir glaubwürdig einige vorteile einer solchen zusammenarbeit (für die liberale bewegung in österreich, wohlgemerkt) aufzeigt. ich sehen keinen - und auch der chef des lif, alexander zach, war im zib2 interview nicht gerade die überzeugungskraft in person. die liberalen haben mit der övp (wirtschaftsliberalismus) mindestens so viel oder so wenig gemeinsam wie mit der spö (kultureller liberalismus), daher scheint mir diese entscheidung äußerst willkürlich. ob hier die klassische liberale idee nicht zu einem äußerst billigen preis verkauft wurde, werden wohl bereits die ersten wochen nach der wahl zeigen. im ersten moment mag es ja opportun erscheinen, für ein paar wochen ins rampenlicht zu rücken, nach dem motto: weniger als keine wähler gibt es ja nicht, also kann man schon mal was riskieren. für einen längerfristigen aufbau einer wirklich liberalen partei sind solche aktionen jedoch ein bärendienst.

or let me put it like this...twelve OR five is the magic number. so, I chose option 3 (just read the previous entry) which means that I am going to stick around in austria for a while. I cancelled my flight to portland and I have to admit it still hurts a bit. but I am trying to get on track (or stay on track) with my us grad school plans. more updates on that within the next weeks, big promise. and if it´s not working out I am back at wu, fast as a lightbolt. oh, and I got an internship at a small radiostation in salzburg starting on the 11th of september - I need that for my bachelor´s degree. I am already hosting a show with some friends, but since this has nothing to do with politics it´s not counting.

from now on I am going to post the progress on my "returning to the us plans" on my blog. I am going to start with the options I have so far:

- returning to salem on august 21st. advantages: great place and responsible for the best year of my life. disadvantages: not enough time to plan everything out the way I want it to.

- getting my bachelor´s degree in salzburg and applying for grad school in the states for august 2007. advantages: enough time for planning, would be easier (financially speaking). disadvantages: I have to stay in austria for 12 long months. what if I don´t get my bachelor´s during that time (well, that should be no problem) or if I am not being accepted for grad school?

- postpone my return to salem until january 2007. advantages: I can see where my salzburg bachelor´s/US grad school plans take me. if there are too many things going wrong I can always return to the states, getting my bachelor´s there and see what happens. disadvantages: can´t think of any, right now. so this is what I am going to do, as it looks like.

wow, I was hoping for them to do a good job and ecuador did not disappoint me. two-nil against poland, due to maintaining their discipline against a team that seems to have troubles being a team. let´s wait and see what else group a is going to reveal. oh, and I think susy, gabbycita and javier are going to party now - greetings to you, guys!

Und da ist es auch schon vorbei, die erste Partie der Fußballweltmeisterschaft, das Eröffnungsspiel, Deutschland gegen Costa Rica, 4:2, also sechs Tore, ein Feuerwerk, und das ungefähr ein halbes Jahr vor Ende der Semesterferien. Über diesen Zufall spricht aber niemand, nein, es lässt sich gut an, die WM für die Weltgastgeber und alles was zählt ist die Begeisterung, auch wenn Paulo Wanchope kein Ronaldinho ist – aber genau das herauszufinden wird den Deutschen nicht erspart bleiben.

Und jetzt spielt Ecuador, und wenn sie es gut machen, dann spielen sie nicht, nein, dann zelebrieren sie Fussball, ja ist ihnen das denn zuzutrauen, wer weiß das schon, und es wird die Welle der Begeisterung hineingetragen in die Tiefe des lateinamerikanischen Raums. Und nicht nur das, auch in die Höhe, in die Höhe von Quito, der Hauptstadt der Gelb-Blau-Roten, die mit Polen zwar einen schweren aber doch bezwingbaren Gegner in der Gruppe A vorfinden – von Deutschland wissen die Ecuadorianer ja, das letzteres leider nicht zutreffen kann.

Costa Rica machte den Anfang, jetzt Ecuador, morgen geht es ganz in den Süden nach Argentinien, auch Trinidad und Tobago und Paraguay werden sich die Ehre geben – dann fehlen noch Brasilien und Mexiko und mit den USA werden dann die Amerikas, alle die es gibt!, erste Duftmarken gesetzt haben, die weitere Ausblicke erlauben.

Vorerst möchte ich aber nicht weiter eure Zeit stehlen - schließlich spielt ja Polen und der Anstand müsste mir eigentlich solche Wortspiele verbieten. Einundzwanzig Uhr, Anpfiff.
